Originally, Opals & Gems of Australia began as an Australian gem mining company in 1956 founded by Jack Ross.   Jack Ross, began mining for opals and other gemstones in 1956 and lead mining expeditions throughout Australia, South America, and other parts of the world.   Australia native, Hayden Ross, has been in the Australian opal jewelry business for over 35 years. Opals & Gems of Australia has over 50 years of long established relationships with miners, cutters, and manufacturers allowing us to buy directly from these sources and cherry pick the finest gems available at the best prices.  Opals & Gems of Australia is known for carrying some of the finest Australian opal jewelry and one of the best selections in the world. Each opal is hand selected and must have the quality and color we demand.   Hayden's natural artistic inclination, helped him to quickly learn the how to discern the qualities to look for when grading opals and other gemstones. After working with the family mining business, which also included cutting and wholesaling, he ventured into retail, starting in 1978 in Adelaide, South Australia, the opal capital of the world. In 1978, Hayden Ross later opened another store in Honolulu, The House of Opal, where he met his wife, Carmen, who shared his love for opals and business vision.   In 1988, together they opened Opals & Gems of Australia  in The Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego and subsequently more stores in The San Francisco Centre, and The  Forum Shops at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.   Opals & Gems of Australia earned a renowned reputation for the finest opal jewelry selection and service anywhere.   They also expanded their exotic colored opal jewelry selection, many items custom designed by Carmen Ross.
